BYOS Monoblack Devotion - 5th Edition, Innistrad, Theros

I missed the second BYOS event at Tenth Planet, but did make it out to Wonko's for our third event. This time I piloted Monoblack Devotion. Originally this was based on M14, Innistrad, and Theros--M14 provides Mutavault, which I'm a fan of--but the Riddler convinced me that 5th Edition was better. Wound up not having room for Dark Ritual, but I still had fun with this list:

[deck]1 Bile Blight
4 Blood Artist
1 Erebos, God of the Dead
4 Geralf's Messenger
4 Gravecrawler
4 Gray Merchant of Asphodel
4 Hero's Downfall
4 Liliana of the Veil
3 Pox
2 Read the Bones
4 Thoughtseize
1 Whip of Erebos
1 Zombie Master
2 Cavern of Souls
2 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
19 Swamp[/deck]

[deck]1 Animate Dead
2 Curse of Death's Hold
2 Deathgrip
2 Drown in Sorrow
2 Gloom
2 Grafdigger's Cage
1 Pestilence
1 Terror
1 Tribute to Hunger
1 Victim of Night[/deck]

Round 1 vs. BW Tokens

Game 1: I got stomped pretty quickly.

Game 2: Lost again, this time after sandbagging a Drown in Sorrow one turn longer than I ought to have. I was hoping to kill all of his spirits after he flashed back Lingering Souls, but he ripped it out of my hand with discard.

Round 2 vs. 5-Color Control

Game 1: Zombie beats for the win!

Game 2: Zombie beats for the win!

Round 3 vs. Abzan Midrange

Game 1: Zombie beats for the win!

Game 2: Zombie beats for the win!

Round 4 vs. UB Faeries

Game 1: Despite a super sweet play on my part--killing his Mistbind to de-Champion a Spellstutter Sprite in order to counter his Duress--I lost to Bitterblossom tokens.

Game 2: More of the same. Couldn't keep up with the Fae.

All in all, a sweet deck. Innistrad is definitely at top of the list of blocks that one should consider when building a monoblack deck. Theros doesn't give too many options, but its removal spells and Gray Merchant are no joke. It's possible I should have gone with M12 or M14 over 5th Edition. Maybe next time.
