ATX BYOS Metagame thread

Postby eldashgato » Sat Mar 26, 2016 10:56 am

I'm starting this thread to keep track of what kinds of decks people have been playing at our BYOS events so far.

BYOS Tourney #1

This is a comment from Oinkster, giving a breakdown on our first event on Feb. 19:

oinksterthepig wrote:We had 11 last night for BYOS at wonko's. this was especially encouraging with the knowledge that several interested players were not able to attend due to conflicts.
Archetype breakdown.
delver: ice age/innistrad/m12
jund: rav/alara/m11
eldrazi: zen/bfz/5th?
valakut: time spiral/zen/m11
esper control: time spiral/innistrad/m11
worldgorger dragon: odyssey/mirage/5th?
turbofog: mirrodin/tempest/10th?
living end: time spiral/alara/m11
goblins: invasion/onslaught/m12
dredge: odyssey/rav/7th
dragonstorm: ice age/time spiral/9th

Time spiral was by far the most represented due to having an ocean of weird mechanics and reprints including some of the most efficient card draw (ancestral visions) and "fast" mana (lotus bloom). Also notably no one playing time spiral played tarmogoyf.

Combo was heavily represented with dragonstorm going 4 - 0, but the two fairest decks Jund and esper control came in 2nd and 3rd (both only losing to dragonstorm in close three game sets) so it's any decks game.

Some questions remain though. Where is lorwyn block and it's obvious tribal synergies? (faeries most notably) Where was the obvious combo of sneak and show? Is time spiral just too good? (doubtful) and most importantly why did valakut suck? (Josh Graves went 0 - 4).

I played Friggorid at the first BYOS and went 3-1.

R1 Goblins (Inv-Ons-M12): win G1 with flying ichorids, lose G2 to quick beats + goblin grenade, win G3 by grinding 2/2 zombies & opponent being stuck on mana. Had to grind 2/2's in the face of active sharpshooter.

R2 Living End (TSS-ALA-M11): lose G1 mull to 4 finding nothing, lose G2 mull to 4 find nothing and opponent had turn 3/4 living end, but at least I had 2x ray of revelation in my 4 card hand at the ready for his leylines

R3 Jund (Rav-Ala-M10): win G1 with flying army, lose G2 to a standard Jund curve, win G3 I destroy his hand with therapies. He comes back with an Awesome cascade (bit blast into blood braid into Jund charm) but Wonder helps me pull out a win.

R4 Valakut (Tss-Zen-M11): win g1 unimpeded with flying team, lose g2 by keeping slower hand and getting prime timed on t4, win G3 like g1.

Friggorid (ODY-RAV-7th)
[deck]4 city of brass
4 underground river
4 watery grave
4 cephalid coliseum
2 riftstone portal
3 island
1 swamp
4 ichorid
4 psychatog
4 stinkweed imp
4 golgari grave troll
1 golgari thug
4 putrid imp
1 wonder
4 zombie infestation
4 deep analysis
4 tolarian winds
4 cabal therapy
Sideboard
4 coffin purge
3 ray of revelation
4 moments peace
3 darkblast
1 wonder[/deck]

I don't think I'd play Friggorid again but if I did I'd shave 1 or 2 deep analysis for dark blast and one more wonder main. I didn't take anyone out with a lethal tog, but I would try to use that line more often next time.

I played MUD with Urza's/Scars/10th in the 3/25 BYOS event at Tenth Planet.

Quick summary of rounds:
R1: Loss to RDWs. I lost the die roll, lost both games in which I was on the draw and won the game I was on the play.
R2: Loss to Eldrazi. I won game 1 off a quick forgemaster into blightsteel. Games 2 and 3 thought-knots ripped critical cards from my hand on t3 and I was unable to accelerate anything powerful quickly enough to survive.
R3: Win vs Sneak and Show: I won in 2. Both games my opponent resolved a show and tell for me to drop a forgemaster and deal with their threat. I won game 2 by restarting the game with karn and starting with emrakul in play.
R4: Win vs Aristocrats: Lost game 1 after we both mulled to 5, but he had double falkenwrath that I couldn't handle. Won games 2 and 3 off explosive hands dropping karn t3 in one and killing t4 with blightsteel in the other.

Deck:
[deck]4 Grim Monolith
4 Metalworker
4 Chromatic Star
4 Mind stone
4 Kuldotha Forgemaster
4 Karn Liberated
4 Goblin Welder
2 Thran Dynamo
2 mox opal
2 Voltaic Key
2 Wumcoil Engine
1 Spine of Ish Sah
1 Blightsteel Colossus
1 Platinum Angel
1 ichor wellspring
1 Mindslaver
4 inkmoth nexus
4 glimmerpost
1 phyrexia's core
10 mountain[/deck]
Sideboard:
[deck]3 lodestone golem
3 defense grid
2 whipflare
1 wurmcoil engine
1 platinum emperion
2 shatter
2 pithing needle[/deck]

I was the midrange Jund player (Rav/Alara/11) at the first event at Wonko's.

Round 1 vs. Worldgorger
Game 1 I stall long enough with duress and blightning to beat down.
Game 2 he wins turn 2. Interestingly I had turn 1 birds with turn 2 Jund charm possible, so I could have won this on the play.
Game 3 I stick necrogenesis, forcing him to go off that turn. He actually has 2 dragons in the yard and 2 reanimation spells in hand, and I only have 3 mana up, but I terminate Dragon with its trigger on the stack, exiling all his permanents.

Round 2 vs. Dragonstorm
One game (2, I think) I get enough delay with duress to kill him. The other two games he cheaty-avoids discard with brainstorm and kills me quickly.

Round 3 vs. Dredge
Game 1 he wins in the air (discard is really bad in this matchup), game 2 I curve out, game 3 he gets insanely lucky with therapy hitting 3 bloodbraids and kills me one turn before I would kill him.

Round 4: Bye

I also have played the deck against a number of other decks.

Esper reanimator control: preboard is hopeless, nothing to challenge lingering souls or Akroma and not fast enough against Damnation. Post-board with graveyard hate and pulse might be better; didn't board at all.

Goblins: Efficient removal and bigger creatures get there.

Living end: I managed to win one game pre board after he combo'd off with double thrinax and double bolt. But usually though, I think you're looking for the graveyard hate in game 2.

Jeskai goblin trenches control: Even matchup; we went back and forth.

Merfolk: seems pretty difficult.

5 color control: I think they're just less efficient, so we're favored here.

Seismic swans: rarely fast enough to combo us out, plus we have terminate and pulse and our creatures can't be assaulted efficiently.

Decklist
4 Dark Confidant
4 Lightning bolt
4 Bloodbraid elf
4 Sprouting Thrinax
4 Duress
4 Blightning
3 Obstinate Baloth
3 Birds of Paradise
2 Putrid Leech
2 Terminate
1 Maelstrom Pulse
1 Bituminous Blast
1 Garruk Wildspeaker

4 Stomping Ground
4 Overgrown Tomb
4 Blood Crypt
3 Savage Lands
2 Forest
2 Swamp
2 Mountain
1 Rootbound Crag
1 Dragonskull summit

Side:
4 Jund Charm
3 Melstrom Pulse
3 Necrogenesis
1 Bituminous Blast
1 Broodmate Dragon
1 Liliana Vess
1 Garruk Wildspeaker
1 Terminate

BYOS Tourney #3

Rather than reply to this comment with your decklists, consider creating a separate thread to discuss it. This keeps this thread focused on the metagame results, and makes it easier to find decklist information later, in case someone wants to revisit a deck, etc.

We had 12 players show up for this event at Wonko's. Thanks again to the Dow family for hosting us. Here's the breakdown:

Hypergenesis (Shards of Alara, Time Spiral, 6th Ed.)
Goblin Trenches Jeskai Control (Return to Ravnica, Invasion, 10th Ed.)
Monoblack Devotion (Innistrad, Theros, 5th Ed.)
5-Color Control (Invasion, Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, 5th Ed.)
Abzan (Khans of Tarkir, Shards of Alara, M11)
UB Faeries (Urza's Saga, Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, 7th Ed.) (We had two players on Faeries with the same block and core set choices.)
GW KOTR Geddon (Shards of Alara, Khans of Tarkir, 5th Ed.)
BW Tokens (Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, Innistrad, M11) - This deck went 4-0.
UW Delver (Ice Age, Innistrad, M11)
Welder MUD (Urza's Saga, Scars of Mirrodin, 10th Ed.)
GR Land Desctruction (Tempest, Urza's Saga, 10th Ed.)

Shards of Alara, Innistrad, Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, and M11 all had strong showings at this event. Interestingly, the only full-on combo deck in the room was Hypergenesis.
